Westchester Elementary Strings to Perform at Eastern Division Conference of
The National Association for Music Education, Sat., Apr. 6, 2013

After a rigorous application process, Westchester Elementary Strings, one of the three orchestras of the Greater Westchester Youth Orchestras Association (GWYOA), has been selected to perform at the 2013 Eastern Division Conference of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) in Hartford, CT.

The groups selected to perform at the Eastern Division Conference are balanced so that they represent all levels from elementary through college, and bands, orchestras, choruses, and non-traditional groups as well. GWYOA is honored that its Westchester Elementary Strings Orchestra has been chosen to perform. The Westchester Elementary Strings Orchestra will perform on Saturday, April 6 and is the only elementary music group and the only performing group representing Westchester of the 16 groups selected to perform at the conference.

The Conference meets every two years, in any one of its 13 member states. This year, the Conference is in Hartford, Connecticut, on April 5, 6, and 7.

Selected by competitive audition, the 60-member Westchester Elementary Strings Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Klinger, is comprised of students in grades 4, 5, and 6 from Westchester County and the surrounding area. Playing violin, viola, cello and double bass, the students rehearse at the Westchester Community College in Valhalla, on Monday evenings from September through April. In addition to performing at major recital halls in Westchester and New York City, the orchestra also holds concerts in schools, senior centers, nursing homes, hospitals, and hotels throughout Westchester.

The Greater Westchester Youth Orchestras Association is a not-for-profit organization consisting of three orchestras made up of students in grades four through twelve from Westchester County, NY, and from the surrounding counties in the Tri-State area. In addition to the Westchester Elementary Strings Orchestra, there are two other orchestras for older students: the Junior Strings Orchestra, conducted by Ms. Jacqueline Stern, and the Youth Symphony, conducted by Mr. Vincent Lionti. Junior Strings is a string orchestra comprised of students in grades 7 through 9, and the Youth Symphony is a full symphony orchestra of high school students playing strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion.

The GWYOA works in cooperation with the Westchester Community College in Valhalla, NY, and participants ares elected by audition. The GWYOA has been helping young musicians grow for 59 years!

All GWYOA orchestras performed a Winter Concert in the Academic Arts Theater of Westchester Community College and will perform a Spring Concert on May 5, 2013 in Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center.
